Sole traders and landlords with a turnover of over £50,000 now need to comply with Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, with the first quarterly update deadline falling on 7 August 2026.
HMRC is encouraging affected businesses to make sure they are using compatible software and are ready to submit their unadjusted summary of income and expenses before the deadline.
MTD will also be extended to individuals with turnover above £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028, so many smaller businesses will be affected in the coming years.
For guidance on how MTD works, compatible software and how to sign up, visit the Making Tax Digital for Income Tax pages on GOV.UK.
