Here are six simple ways to make your shop more secure:
1. Welcome customers as they enter
A simple greeting can make a difference. Leicestershire Police recommend the “three-to-five second rule” – acknowledging customers soon after they enter shows that staff are paying attention and can make a shop less attractive to someone intending to steal.
2. Identify where theft is happening
Keep a record of incidents, including where and when they occur and any relevant CCTV. This can help you identify patterns and vulnerable areas within your premises.
Once you know where the risks are, consider whether stock, shelving, staff positioning or CCTV can be changed to improve visibility.
3. Consider electronic security measures
Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) and other anti-theft systems can provide an additional deterrent. Leicestershire Police advises businesses to consider correctly installed, security-accredited systems where appropriate.
4. Keep your premises tidy and visible
A clear, well-maintained shop makes it easier for staff to see what is happening. Keeping aisles uncluttered and avoiding unnecessary obstructions can improve visibility across the shop floor.
The same principle applies outside the premises. Good maintenance and clear sightlines can help make the whole area feel more secure.
5. Put staff safety first
Shoplifting incidents can sometimes involve aggressive or unpredictable behaviour. Staff should never put themselves at risk to protect stock.
Leicestershire Police advises businesses to carry out appropriate risk assessments and ensure staff know how to respond safely. If someone appears suspicious, staff should only engage when it is safe to do so and should alert a manager or security colleague if they feel uncomfortable.
6. Avoid working alone where possible
Businesses should consider staffing arrangements carefully, particularly during periods when there may be increased risk. Having more than one member of staff present can provide additional awareness and reassurance.
Staff should also be given appropriate training so they understand how to recognise suspicious behaviour and what to do if an incident occurs.
7.Take a few minutes to check your security
