Government announces energy bill support for businesses

28 September 2022

Updated 14 October 2022

A new Energy Bill Relief Scheme will provide help with the cost of gas and electricity for all non-domestic customers, including all UK businesses and voluntary and public sector organisations. The scheme will apply to fixed contracts agreed on or after 1 December 2021, as well as to deemed, variable and flexible tariffs for energy usage from 1 October to 31 March.

Customers do not need to take action or apply to the scheme to receive the support, which will automatically be applied to bills. After three months, there will be a review into the operation of the scheme to inform decisions on further support after March 2023.

The level of price reduction for each business will depend on their contract type and circumstances.

Full information is available in the press notice.

As part of the Great Manchester Growth Hub campaign #Hereforbusiness, a series of webinars has been planned to support organisations in dealing with this. Businesses from Leicester and Leicestershire are welcome to register and join these sessions.

The initial webinar will take place next Tuesday 11 October (9-10am) and will look at the current challenges of the cost of doing business and wider operating environment. The webinar will explain the Business Energy Bill Relief Scheme, which is currently set to last for only 6 months and will also explore some of the immediate opportunities to reduce consumption.

The webinar will be Chaired by Steve Connor, Net Zero Lead, at the GM LEP, and includes speakers from Cornwall Insights, Utilities Intermediaries Association, BEIS and the GM Growth Hub.

The remainder of the series will explore wider opportunities for cost control, access to finance, improved productivity and responsible restructuring.
