Mark Armed Forces Day by Signing the Armed Forces Covenant: A Call to Local SMEs
23 June 2026As the nation prepares to celebrate Armed Forces Day on 27 June 2026, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across the UK are being encouraged to strengthen their commitment to the Armed Forces community by signing the Armed Forces Covenant and joining the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS).
The Armed Forces Covenant (AFC) is a national pledge that ensures serving personnel, reservists, veterans and military families are treated fairly and are not disadvantaged because of their service. By signing the Covenant, businesses demonstrate their support for the men and women who serve the nation and gain access to a recognised framework for developing military-friendly employment practices.
The Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, managed by the Ministry of Defence, provides a clear pathway for organisations to showcase their commitment through Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. The scheme recognises employers that actively support defence and align their values with the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant.
For SMEs, signing the Covenant is not simply a symbolic gesture. It offers an opportunity to attract talented individuals with valuable leadership, teamwork, problem-solving and technical skills developed through military service.
Many businesses also find that supporting reservists and veterans enhances workplace culture, strengthens community engagement and demonstrates corporate social responsibility to customers, partners and stakeholders.
