The first year of Leicester’s Best Bar None scheme secured the ‘Best New Scheme’ award at the national Best Bar None awards, hosted at the House of Commons this week.
The scheme is a national initiative that rewards well-run pubs, clubs, and bars. It aims to promote excellence and safety in the licensed trade, in turn contributing to a more enjoyable experience for customers.
Supported by the Home Office and industry bodies, Best Bar None has showed success in reducing anti-social behaviour, with some areas experiencing up to a 30% reduction in alcohol-related crimes where the scheme is implemented.
The scheme has been introduced to the city by Leicester’s Business Improvement District, BID Leicester, which is a not-for-profit company funded by local businesses. The BID works to raise the profile of the city and make it a cleaner, safer and more attractive place for all.
Simon Jenner, BID Leicester Director, expressed his delight, saying, “This award underscores our commitment to championing safe, responsible, and well-operated establishments in Leicester, we’re thrilled to have been recognised for this nationally. We’re grateful to our sponsors, De Montfort University, The Music Licence, and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner, for making the scheme possible.”
The Best Bar None assessment acts as a detailed check-up to make sure that venues meet the highest standards. 47 licensed venues achieved accreditation last year, showcasing them as top-notch operators, committed to excellence and safety. Of these, 5 well-loved Leicester establishments were named as the best performing in various categories.
From The Rutland & Derby, winners of the ‘Best Independent Pub/Bar’ category, Beautiful Pubs Managing Director Sam Haggar said, “The Best Bar None scheme celebrates the dedication of Leicester’s hospitality industry to providing exceptional experiences and its commitment to always improving for its customers. Best Bar None helps to ensure our city remains safe and welcoming, by promoting responsible, customer focused practices.”
BID Leicester will be reopening applications for the second year of the scheme later in 2024. For more information visit bidleicester.co.uk/BBN.
