Leicestershire County Council Seeks Local Businesses for 2026 Active Travel Programme

21 November 2025

Leicestershire County Council’s Choose How You Move team is inviting a small to medium-sized business to take part in its 2026 Business Active Travel Programme. The initiative, delivered through the council’s Sustainable Travel department, aims to help organisations with 50–200 employees improve sustainable travel options for staff and visitors.

The programme focuses on supporting workplaces to develop the right facilities and culture to encourage active and environmentally friendly travel. The selected business will receive three months of intensive engagement beginning in January 2026, followed by a further three months of lighter support.

According to the Sustainable Travel Team, participating businesses can expect help to:

  • Increase active travel among employees

  • Improve staff health and wellbeing

  • Reduce pressure on car parking

  • Create a safer environment for staff, visitors and the wider community

The council is offering a package of practical support, including access to cycle training, recycled bikes, e-bike training and loan schemes, bike maintenance sessions, travel information packs for staff, and guidance on initiatives such as Park and Stride. Businesses will also receive assistance with national events such as Car Free Day and Cycle to Work Day, as well as support using Modeshift for Business.

In addition, businesses taking part can apply for government funding to further strengthen their active travel initiatives. Details of the current £1 million innovation competition can be found via the UK Government website.

The programme will officially launch in early 2026. Interested businesses are encouraged to email choosehowyoumove@leics.gov.uk with their company name and contact details for the staff member who would lead the engagement.
