Remember your auto-enrolment responsibilities
If you’re thinking of taking on seasonal or temporary staff to help you through the festive period, or have staff whose pay and hours fluctuate, be aware that you’ll have automatic enrolment responsibilities. You must assess seasonal or temporary staff individually to work out who to put into a workplace pension scheme – even if you employ just one person. This includes staff who work for a few days, a few weeks or several months.
Your assessment of who to put into a pension scheme may be more complex, taking more time and effort, as you’ll need to take into account:
- that they may only work for you for short periods of time
- that they may join and leave your employment in the middle of pay periods
- that their earnings and hours vary
To help make this easier and to save time, you should check whether your payroll software can help, and you could consider using postponement to delay working out who to put into a pension scheme.
