The UK’s Secretary of State for Transport, Grant Shapps, has announced upgrades and improvements to the nation’s road and rail networks in response to the coronavirus crisis, and measures taken to speed up the economic recovery.
Transport has a critical role to play in the UK’s economic recovery, and to that end, a £2 billion programme to improve cycling and walking infrastructure has been announced.
Cycling and walking is being prioritised to avoid overcrowding – and thus a breakdown in social distancing – on public transport.
Essential work on road and rail networks have been undertaken with 419 network rail upgrades over Easter and 1,000 over May bank holiday.
Highways England has delivered over £200 million of upgrades during the coronavirus. As well as this, Mr Shapps announced a £2 billion package of upgrade to the nation’s roads.
