Event Details

Ever had a great idea for a start-up business but not had the time, experience or connections to bring it to life?

Pitch, Build and Launch a Start-up in a Single Weekend

This weekend-long event is dedicated to team building, expert mentoring, networking and pitching to help you turn your business idea into a ready-to-launch startup. With a mix of technical and non-technical attendees, it doesn’t matter what experience or skill set you have, as long as you have enthusiasm to try new things and work together on new ideas.

Over the 3 days you will:

  • Share your business ideas with a receptive audience
  • Learn how to validate and develop a business idea
  • Meet like-minded individuals and potential co-founders
  • Get help from experienced business mentors
  • Connect with Leicester’s thriving start-up community

WHEN: Friday 3rd Dec (evening), 4th & 5th Dec (weekend)

WHERE: This is an in-person event but our venues are TBC (they will be in Leicester)

We’re looking for passionate aspiring entrepreneurs looking to build an innovative and scaleable business. This won’t be suitable if you’re a lifestyle business or a start-up that’s too far advanced and have an existing team. But if you’re actively working on a start-up, you want to learn more or you want to test a spark of an idea, this is the place for you!

Previous participants had this to say:

“It was brilliant, I have never enjoyed a business experience as much as this…a very practical/real life experience”

“the chance to build something that can really take off and attain investment is better than any other uni project”

The Startup Weekend is a ‘hackathon’ style event where teams form around the most popular and feasible ideas and work together to develop and refine them; including speaking with mentors, attending short workshops and pitching their idea to a panel of entrepreneurs.

It doesn’t matter what experience or skills you have, or whether you’re actively working on an idea or not, as long as you have the enthusiasm to try new things and work together on new ideas.

The weekend is being facilitated by Andrew Constable, the founder of Visualise Solutions and a certified Leanstack Startup Coach. He has 20+ years experience of working in business and is a member of the Association of Business Mentors and a fellow of the Institute of Innovation and knowledge exchange. He’s also an MBA qualified consultant, Forbes contributor & co-author of the book “Online Innovation”.

It begins on Friday night with open-mic “elevator pitches”, where participants get 60 seconds to pitch their ideas to the crowd and try to recruit the best talent in the room. Teams then form around the most exciting ideas and spend the rest of the night planning for the weekend ahead. The whole of Saturday and much of Sunday is a mad dash to build, validate, pivot, polish and test your Minimal Viable Product (MVP). The weekend culminates with a pitch night where teams present their MVP to a panel of founders, mentors and fellow participants.

The Leicester Startup Weekend is supported by the Leicester & Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership’s Business Gateway.  The Business Gateway is a one stop shop for all types of business throughout Leicester and Leicestershire, particularly SMEs and microbusinesses. It provides impartial advice and support through its Business Advisers, consultancy and help with applying for funding, and a wide range of seminars on issues such as Zero Carbon, Digital Marketing and Innovation.

We’re able to hold events like these thanks to the Leicester Startup Co-working Project. The project is led by University of Leicester/Leicester Innovation Hub together with LLEP, Leicester Startups, LCB Depot, Innovation Centre (DMU), Co-operative and Social Enterprise Development Agency (CaSE).
